We Built a Free Tool Finder for Trade Contractors. Here’s Exactly How It Decides.

There are now twenty-six software tools we’ve researched and written about across seven trades — and if you’re a contractor trying to pick one on a Tuesday night after a full day on the tools, that’s not a library, it’s a wall.

So we built something to fix it: the Augmented Trades Tool Finder. Seven questions, about two minutes, and you get a recommended stack matched to your trade, your team size, your work mix, and whatever is actually broken in your operation — missed calls, estimating, scheduling, reviews, documentation, the books.

It’s free, there’s no email gate, and the results are printable. Here’s the part that matters: how it decides.

A fixed matrix, not a magic 8-ball

Most “software quiz” tools on the internet are lead-capture forms wearing a costume. You answer questions, and the tool recommends whoever pays the site the most, every time, for everyone.

Ours works differently, and we’ll show our math.

Every recommendation comes from a fixed, editor-maintained scoring matrix built entirely from our published evaluations — the same pillar guides and head-to-head comparisons already on this site. If we never tested and wrote about a tool, the Tool Finder cannot recommend it. The same inputs always produce the same results. And every recommendation on your results card links to the article where we made that call, so you can read the reasoning, not just the verdict.

This is an approach borrowed from how regulated industries handle recommendations: document the inputs, fix the rules, and make every output traceable back to its source. It keeps us honest, and it gives you something most software advice doesn’t — a paper trail.

The scoring is affiliate-blind. Here’s the proof.

Augmented Trades earns commissions on some tools through affiliate links — that’s how this site keeps the lights on, and it’s disclosed on every page and on every results card.

But the scores never change based on commissions, and the Tool Finder proves it in the results: tell it you’re a commercial electrical contractor, and its top platform pick is Knowify — a tool that earns us exactly nothing. It wins that category in our published testing, so it wins in the matrix. Buildertrend, JobTread, and Roofr show up the same way for their trades, all labeled plainly: “not an affiliate — we earn nothing.”

If a recommendation engine never surprises its owner’s wallet, it isn’t a recommendation engine.

Your results are dated — on purpose

Every results card carries a generation timestamp and the version of the scoring matrix that produced it, and every price shows the date we verified it. Print the card, share the link, come back in six months — you’ll know exactly what was true when you got your answer, even if a vendor has changed prices or been acquired since.

Software pricing changes constantly. Advice that pretends otherwise is how contractors end up budgeting for last year’s price list.

What it doesn’t do

The Tool Finder won’t tell you your ROI, because we don’t know your ROI and neither does anyone else selling you software. It won’t capture your email before showing results. And it won’t recommend a tool because the vendor had a good quarter — the matrix only changes when our published testing changes, and the version number changes with it.

Try it, then go deeper

Run your shop through it: augmentedtrades.com/resources.

Then, if you want the full reasoning behind your results, every trade has a complete reading order: plumbers, HVAC, electricians, roofers, landscapers, general contractors, and remodelers and custom builders.

If the Tool Finder gets something wrong for your shop, reply and tell us — the matrix is versioned, and we’d rather fix it than defend it.
