A good contractor estimate template wins the job and protects your margin. The free blank forms all over the internet do the first part — they look professional. They don’t do the second: they let you quote a number without knowing what you’ll actually make. What every contractor estimate needs
- Your business details and an estimate number — plus the date and a “valid until” date (estimates shouldn’t be open-ended).
- Customer and job-site info.
- Line items — clear descriptions of labor and materials with quantities.
- Pricing — unit price and line totals, a subtotal, tax, and the total.
- Scope and terms — what’s included, deposit, and what triggers a change order.

Quoting a price out of thin air is how contractors win jobs and still lose money. The fix is to estimate from your cost and apply a markup — then check the margin before you send.
